Site-Based Teacher Education & Professional Development

Our Programs

The Urban Teaching Academy has a teacher preparation component UTeach, and a site based C & I Masters Degree component. Both of these accredited programs are supported and sanctioned by CSULB in collaboration with school district partners.

 Connecting Theory and Practice in Real School Settings. The UTeach program prepares future teachers to meet the challenges of teaching in urban schools. UTeach preservice teachers learn how to teach children hands-on in  urban classrooms surrounded by students. The program honors the teacher preparation developmental process. 


Program Features
• Teaching method courses are held at school sites working with students in real classroom settings.
• Personalized attention from university faculty and school based personnel
• Course work and student teaching are connected to real teaching in urban classrooms.
• UTeach faculty and master teachers support, instruct and advise teaching candidates on site in a school based, personalized setting.
• Future teachers learn to navigate school culture in a selected urban school setting.
• Impacting schools and students by educating confident, well prepared new teachers, who effectively teach in urban schools.

C & I Site-Based Master Degree Program
A Teaching and Research Residency Model

A site-based applied master degree program educating teachers to engage in addressing the needs of their students in urban schools. Curriculum and Instruction Masters Degree programs are located on-site in school-based locations and are tailored to the specific needs of teachers, schools and urban school districts.



Program Features
• Working with colleagues on scholarly research, best practices and curriculum development.
• Conducting original action research that is meaningful to teachers and their professional goals.
 • A thorough examination of practice connected theory to improve teaching and advance professional aspirations.
 • Program curriculum and instructional design is based on the needs of working professional teachers.
 • A nationally recognized 30-unit program in advanced study of curriculum development, instructional practices, history of education, and classroom action research.
